Event
Utopia / Dystopia
(Graduate Student Conference in Romance
Studies)
.
Description
“Either as an idealization
of the past or as the projection of a perfect future community, Utopia has been
part of a particular human desire: to provoke a revolution in the status quo,
to transform the present, to modify social inequities, to transcend earthly limitations.
This aspiration, nevertheless, has been used as an instrument by diverse dominant
groups (in terms of class, religion, politics, race, and gender, for instance)
in order to impose their own rules, conceptions, and prejudices to subaltern
groups, which eventually reveals the dark opposite of Utopias: Dystopias. [...]
Duke’s
Romance Studies Graduate Student Conference is interested in examining this intimate
link between Utopias and Dystopias from diverse perspectives.” (DU)
