Event
Utopia and
Dystopia in Roman Literature
(The Pacific Rim Roman Literature Seminar)
.
Description
“The Pacific Rim Roman
Literature Seminar is an annual conference of Latinists. [...] The topic in 2009
will be [...] exploring how this central notion in human life resonates in the
literature of ancient Rome from a variety of perspectives and by looking at a
wide range of sample texts. [...] Issues / texts that could be discussed include:
concepts on an ideal life that might be situated in a different time (e.g. Golden
Age or visions of the future), in a different place (e.g. Islands of the Blessed,
countryside, realm of the gods or underworld) or just be a vision of the writer;
criticism of present conditions against the implicit or explicit background of
an ideal set-up; implicit or explicit advice on how to achieve an ideal life
or ideal way of behaviour or to avoid the opposite (e.g. philosophical treatises
or mirrors of princes).” (UCL)
